microsoft syntex began as an internal research process within microsoft research called PICL or machine teaching. the strategy behind syntex was to carry out an effective tech transfer to eventually be a product that would live under the sharepoint umbrella. the concept was that by prompting a machine learning model with hints on how to classify and extract documents, the model could be far more performant with far less labeling.
